Ehtiyotkor ifodalar (hedging)
Fikrni haddan tashqari qatʼiy emas, ehtiyotkor va ilmiy ohangda aytish uchun. C1
Hedging — fikrni yumshatish. Akademik ingliz tilida «Social media causes depression» kabi qatʼiy gaplar xavfli: buni isbotlash qiyin. Ehtiyotkor variant: Social media may contribute to depression yoki Social media appears to be linked to depression. Bu zaiflik emas — ilmiy halollik va aniqlik belgisi.
Asosiy vositalar: modal feʼllar (may, might, could), seem / appear / tend + to-infinitiv, be likely / unlikely to, ehtimol bildiruvchi ravishlar (probably, possibly, generally, arguably) va shaxssiz tuzilmalar (It seems that…, It is possible that…, There is evidence that…).
Miqdor va kuchni ham yumshatish mumkin: all → most / many, always → often / usually, prove → suggest, cause → contribute to.
Lekin hammasini birdan ishlatmang: «It might possibly seem that…» — ortiqcha. Bitta gapda bitta-ikkita ehtiyotkor ifoda yetarli, asosiy fikringiz esa baribir aniq boʻlishi kerak.

Oʻzbek tili bilan farqi
Oʻzbek tilida ham yumshatish bor: «-sa kerak», «-ga oʻxshaydi», «ehtimol», «balki», «shekilli», «-dir» (U uydadir). Farqi: oʻzbekchada bu qoʻshimcha yoki yuklama bilan qilinadi, ingliz tilida esa alohida feʼl tuzilmasi kerak: seem + to-infinitiv, be likely to. Shuning uchun «He is seems tired» yoki «It is seem that…» kabi xatolar chiqadi: seem — oddiy feʼl, u -s oladi va is bilan kelmaydi. Yana bir farq: oʻzbek ilmiy matnlarida «…ni isbotlaydi» kabi qatʼiyroq uslub koʻp uchraydi, ingliz akademik matnida esa bunday qatʼiylik ortiqcha daʼvo boʻlib koʻrinadi.

- IELTS Writing Task 2: ehtiyotkor ifodalar yuqori ball belgisi, lekin pozitsiyangiz aniq boʻlishi kerak. Imtihonchi «nima deb oʻylaysiz?» savoliga aniq javob kutadi — faqat daʼvolarni yumshating, fikrni emas.
- Ogʻzaki nutqda: I'd say…, I suppose…, kind of, sort of. Lekin kind of va sort of norasmiy — inshoda ishlatmang.

Ortiqcha yumshatish: bitta vosita yetarli.

Social media may contribute to depression или Social media appears to be linked to depression. Это не слабость, а признак научной честности и точности.
Основные средства: модальные глаголы (may, might, could), seem / appear / tend + инфинитив с to, be likely / unlikely to, наречия вероятности (probably, possibly, generally, arguably) и безличные конструкции (It seems that…, It is possible that…, There is evidence that…).
Смягчать можно и количество, и силу утверждения: all → most / many, always → often / usually, prove → suggest, cause → contribute to.
Но не используйте всё сразу: «It might possibly seem that…»
Многие переводятся прямо: вероятно → probably, вряд ли → is unlikely to. Главное отличие — там, где в русском вводное слово, в английском часто личная конструкция: «Он, кажется, устал» → He seems to be tired, «Цены, скорее всего, вырастут» → Prices are likely to rise. Отсюда ошибки вроде «Prices are likely will rise». Кроме того, вместо привычного «мы доказали» в английской науке пишут the results suggest.
